After the performers are finished we have been asked to come on stage to represent Shriners Hospital and maybe say a few words about our experience and what they have done for Savanna and our family.  We couldn't be more honored!!

For those of you who know me or have worked with me before, you know I have a very relaxed go with the flow attitude and portrait style.  I prefer to give very little specific "posing" directions, rather just guide my clients to the yummy light and let the littles be little :)

I will however bring fun additions to help add to the session.  In this case a beautiful antique quilt and some fun stories to share.

And now for the Pièce de résistance...

The stars aligned to set up this shot.  We were getting ready to head out when I saw the lights on The Joseph Smith Memorial Building.  I just asked big sister to take little sister's hand and walk down the street.  The end result was simply magic.  Thank you again "H" family for a marvelous night!!

One more just for fun:)

Disconnected...

Well hello there!  I bet you all thought I'd died and gone to heaven right?!  Funny thing is I'm right here in good 'ol Utah.  No fluffy white paradise for me :)  Funny story though...

I had to have gallbladder removal surgery the end of August.  One week after school started no less.  It all happened very quickly so I wasn't able to update the few of you who read this :)  I went to the Dr. on a Wednesday.  He sent me for an ultrasound on Friday.  They called to say I needed to meet the surgeon on Tuesday and I had surgery that Friday.  Those of you who know me very well know that I'm pretty healthy and fit.  I guess you could say I'm gym rat and health food nut.  The surgeon and hospital staff assured me that I would bounce right back.  I was told to take a week off work and to stay out of the gym for 2 weeks or so.  Here's where the funny part happens (not really).

I had a pretty severe reaction to the anesthesia.  I have had 2 gnarly c-sections so I thought laprascopic gallbladder surgery would be a walk in the park.  The hospital had only planned on me staying for the day so they basically pushed my wheelchair out the door vomiting in a lovely little blue bag.  I was told to go home and sleep it off.  I tried to do just that but I honestly felt absolutely awful.  Worse than I'd ever felt before.  My sweet hubby got me all set up in bed and even brought me a walkie talkie in case I needed him.  About an hour later I sat straight up in bed unable to breathe.  I spent several tense moments gasping for air while Rob frantically tried calling the hospital.  This time we were told it was serious and to come back in.  The problem being they had already pushed me out once I wasn't about to go back a second time!

I eventually made it through the night and the surgeon called the next day.  He explained that more than likely my airway had collapsed due to the remaining anesthesia in my system.  For whatever reason I wasn't processing it or getting rid of it in a timely manner.  Add to that the lovely "gas" they had to inject in my abdomen that wasn't dissipating either.  Long story short it took me several weeks to get back to normal and feel like myself again.  I do still have a few minor "issues" popping up occasionally but all in all I'm back to business as usual.

When I sat down to write this post I thought long and hard about what to say.  How should I even start and is this all too personal anyway?  Well I came up with several possible titles before settling on disconnected.  Let me explain how I got here and then I'll share some of the fabulous lessons I learned after the surgery.  I could've titled the post something like "I hate the hospital" or "I ingested my body weight in jello" or even "You find out who your friends are" but disconnected is perfect for where I am right now.  I spent the last month virtually disconnected from modern technology.  And you know what...it was FABULOUS!!!  I have been back to work for a few weeks now but I haven't been here or on Facebook or really even on the internet.  I had plenty of time in bed to really sit and think and re-prioritize my life.  I read magazines and books and watched entirely too much daytime television.  I had several sweet friends who really stepped up to help with meals or taking our kids.  All of this "free time" made me realize how much we all really need those connections.  Real life connections.  Not "virtual" somewhat anonymous connections.  My family and my friends are my life's blood.  My heart and soul.  Now this isn't to say that I'm not passionate about my work.  Believe me I am.  Nothing can move me like the perfect light, in the perfect setting with the perfect subject.  I have always been and will always be deeply moved and connected to my work.  But when the chips are down and it's all said and done I don't want to end my life with regrets.  I don't want those who matter to me to ever wonder just how much I love and need them.

How does all this relate to photography you might ask?  I am right in the thick of the busy season and I don't see it slowing down anytime soon.  And really the "work" itself is not what needs to slow down.  It's me.  I need to really stop and enjoy the process.  We only get one life, so why not enjoy the ride?!  What does this mean for you as a current or future client.  It means that I will still give you 110% when I am working.  But when I am not working I will be giving my family and friends 110%.  I won't be posting here as much or spending much time on Facebook.  I am always more than happy to post photos or share stories, so just ask.  I know we all live in a digital world and to stay in business I have to compete.  That being said I would like to think that I attract and retain some of my best client relationships by being myself.  Open and honest, no holds barred.  While I'd rather you not see me in a swimsuit, what you see is what you get.

Facebook if you ask or if I have a few spare minutes.  I will continue to provide you with beautiful portraits and custom products with top notch customer service.  But I will remain somewhat disconnected.

Thanks for sticking by me!

Absence...

As usual I feel the need to apologize for my absence from the cyberworld.  I won't delve into too many details only to say that I was sidelined with a health issue and for the 1st time in a very long time I just plain didn't feel good.  School starts for my kiddos on Monday and hopefully by then I will have some answers to the health questions so I can get back to my usual snarky self :)

For now I'll leave you with a photo that literally tugs at my heart!  This sweet couple started out as clients and have become very dear friends.  Dear friends who have had MORE than their fair share of heartaches and trails.  Dear friends who have helped me out and picked me up when I needed it.  Dear friends that I can only hope and pray that I will be blessed with the opportunity to repay them for their kindness.  Dear friends who are waiting so very patiently to complete their sweet little family.  You can read more about their story at http://leviandkristalee.blogpsot.com or www.itsaboutlove.org then enter profile ID 42430928

If blogger could just get the color right then you could all be in love too.  Seriously everything about this makes me smile.  The pink ruffly romper, chubby cheeks and long eyelashes oh and let's not forget the fingers.  Those chubby little baby fingers do me in every time.

thanks for humoring me twice in 1 week :)

Top Ten Reasons I'm a Bad Blogger/Facebooker...

Since my lack of posting/updating is pretty obvious I thought I'd give you a sneak peak at my best excuses for the absence.  In my best David Letterman voice...

#10-Our sweet 12 year old Alaskan Malamute is very sick with pneumonia.  It was very touch and go for a few days but we're still crossing our fingers that he'll pull thru!

#9-The night before we left for a 4 day camping trip with Rob's brother & his family our dishwasher went ca put!  Yes that's a real word folks-it means dead as a doornail.  We finally got a new one after almost 3 weeks and man was I ready to throw a party!  Who knew 3 weeks without a dishwasher would be such a life altering event?!

#8-Every year I photograph the Bountiful School of Ballet dress rehearsal and create a poster to hang in the studio.  This year I actually did photos for both the ballet and the jazz rehearsals so my work load was a little larger than normal.

#7-Last weekend the kids and I were invited to enjoy the day boating on Utah Lake.  We had a great time-minus the time spent waiting out the storm in the car :)

#6-Tuesday night around 8pm I got a call from my local credit union asking me where I was located at that exact moment.  You're not in New Castle Delaware?  Nope.  Do you have your debit card in your possession?  Yep.  Well I'm sure you can see where this is going but I'll sum it up just in case.  Some lovely little criminal in Delaware created a fraudulent debit card and happened to make up a number that matched my business debit card.  He used it to purchase $598 of who knows what from a Wal-Mart of all places.  Of course there was no way to catch it until it had already cleared my account.  Long story short I had to fill out a bunch of paperwork and close the card before any other charges could hit.  Luckily the funds are back in my account now but not until after 24 hours of some serious stress.

#5-We spent the 4th of July celebrating with friends and family and the good 'ol West Bountiful parade then hit the "giraffe theatre" for Cars 2.  Afterward we spent some time swimming in Grammy and Papa's pool then headed to Pizza Factory for salad bar and yummy bread sticks then back home to play games and watch the Eaglewood fireworks from our back deck.  A great time was had by all :)

It's pretty rare that I will allow anyone to capture me on the other side of the camera so this is a rare treat.  With my sweet niece Sophie :)

#4-A new park opened in our neighborhood recently and it comes complete with it's own set of water fountains.  Who needs The Gateway and 80million people when you can just swing over to our own little gem?!

#3-As I mentioned in #9 we spent 4 fabulous days camping at Rockport Reservoir with Rob's brother Gary and his wife Danae and their sweet kiddos.  The weather was warm and fabulous and the kids all played and played and played.  Savanna even learned how to play chess with her Uncle Gary.

#2-Many of you may not know this but I suffer from some pretty fabulous food intolerances and have some seriously not fun tummy traumas.  It has gotten really bad over the last year or two so it was time to get to the bottom of it all.  After RIDICULOUS amounts of reading and research I happened upon a book that has changed my life.  Basically it lays out a very specific list of foods that I can and can't eat.  I won't lie and say that I wasn't a little skeptical at first.  I mean I already know that I am lactose and gluten intolerant.  What else could I cut out...fruit and veggies?   That was about all that was left anyway.  Well it turns out that people with tummy "issues" often have a hard time digesting certain carbohydrates, sugars and starches when eaten together or in certain combinations.  In layman's terms some of my favorite fruits and veggies are what's making me sick.  Have I given up on ever eating my beloved broccoli or sweet baby cantaloupe ever again?  Nope but for right now I'm pretty plain jane with a very short list of "approved" foods.  How does this relate to blogging or my lack of it?  Well when you can't have any dairy, wheat, or pre-packaged or prepared foods you are left making everything and I mean EVERYTHING you eat from scratch.  My meal preparation time has more than quadrupled and I'm not going to lie and say that there aren't certain nights when McDonald's drive-thru sounds like heaven.

#1-Well folk's here we are at my #1 reason for the lack of blogging/facebooking...

Date at the ice cream shop...

Seriously is this not the funnest photo ever?!  Yes I know funnest is not a word but I have my own dictionary rules I follow didn't ya know?!  Anyway, on to the photo shall we.  This was one of the best sessions ever, honestly!!  Just look at the colors (if blogger would work properly that is).  Not to mention how sweet hubby is looking at his wife.  If that isn't love I don't know what is.  There are tons more I could share but I'll wait until the family has a chance to take a look first.

Hope you're all having a FAB summer!!
